SERVICE

St. Mark's United Methodist Church Red Cross Shelter Service

St Mark’s, with our Community Life Center, is a Red Cross Shelter facility. In the event of a local community disaster, the Richmond Red Cross Chapter may call upon St Mark's to open our CLC as a shelter for local residents. St Mark’s has a group of people who are trained to open and operate the CLC as a Red Cross Disaster Shelter. Serving our community in a time of such need is indeed extending God's love when most needed.

Operating a CLC as a shelter is in many ways similar to operating the CLC for CARITAS or IMPACT RICHMOND. Community members will come to our church and St Mark’s provides a temporary and safe housing environment and meals. All those gifts we use for CARITAS and IMPACT RICHMOND are again applied to this mission.

Please pray to serve this mission. The time requirement is about 8 hours for initial training on Shelter Operations and then 2 evening meetings a year. For more information please contact Steve Astoria, Ann Yamada , John Speer.

CrossOver Mission Trip: CrossOver Mission Trip - St. Mark’s UMC has committed to partner with the CrossOver Ministry to provide healthcare services to the needy in the name of Jesus Christ. The focus of the mission effort is to provide Saturday morning medical clinics. The first mission trip is scheduled for October 30 at the downtown Richmond location. We still need the following volunteers in order of priority: 1) physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, 2) registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and/or other licensed providers, 3) Spanish speaking translators, and 4) receptionists and office workers. If your expertise is very specialized and you want to serve on our mission trips, let us know and we will work to find a match for your skills.

We extend a heart-felt thank you to all that have committed as volunteers. The CrossOver Ministry will provide volunteer training the week prior to October 30. The training date will be announced well in advance and it will be included in the Connection.

Please contact Sharron or Wally Glasscock if you know of a person(s) who qualifies for any of the above positions. To learn more about the CrossOver Ministry go to http://crossoverministry.org

Bread of Heaven Ministry:  During the month of  September, we are collecting canned vegetables for our food pantry donations to Sherbourne UMC & Holy Comforter Episcopal . Recent requests to the food banks have increased dramatically from 32 to 190. Please help if you can; donation bins are across from our Nursery.
